Geology and geotechnical investigations of part of the Anambra Basin, Southeastern Nigeria: implication for gully erosion hazards

Abstract Background Geologic and geotechnical conditions of soils where Nanka Ajali Formations outcropped in Anambra Basin, Southeastern Nigeria were investigated accessed. This was done using detailed mapping mechanical soil laboratory tests to unravel the genesis continued expansion gully erosion study areas. Results Field revealed that erosions are more pronounced area with poor vegetation cover a high degree slope steepness. Grain size analysis Formation have an average sand content value 90.90% (sandy) silt 3.0% (low fine portions). The plasticity index portions indicates weak plastic, mean 5.29%. cohesion 0.30 kg/cm 2 indicating very cohesion. highly permeable; 2.67 × 10 –3 cm/s. compaction test further loosely compacted. for 95.10% 1.43% 2.70%. 2.70 cm/s . Conclusion After field surveys analyses, it found been developing respectively on steep slopes non-vegetated areas, their facilitated by cohesionless permeable nature sandy formations. Following those key findings, proposed many practices (agronomic engineering mainly) can help mitigate formations as well this damaging hazard type. potential implications these include buildings, residential houses, bridges, roads, loss farmland vegetation, isolation villages towns, increased migration inhabitants degradation agricultural fertile land.
